Stoke-on-Trent station area set for new year revamp

Work to transform the area outside Stoke-on-Trent railway station and create an "accessible transport hub" could begin in the new year.

The city council said the work on Station Road, including Winton Square, would provide an "attractive new public realm".

It includes creating "priority access for buses" with a bus gate at Winton Square and new bus stops and shelters.

A decision on whether to approve the plans is due on 20 December.

The redevelopment of Station Road is the next stage of work using £29m from the government's Transforming Cities Fund, which the local authority said would create a "safe and attractive travel route" from the station to Hanley's centre and bus station.

Work has begun on adjoining College Road, including creating cycle lanes.

"Should the plans be approved, work will be able to get under way quickly to transform this critical travel route for the city, linking the rail station to the city centre, after much planning and consultation," said Chris Robinson, cabinet member for housing, regeneration and planning.

"A nicer environment and highway improvements will provide safer travel options and make a big difference to residents, commuters, students and visitors."

The council hopes the scheme will reduce road congestion and encourage more people to walk and cycle.

It added it hoped the work outside the station would "provide a sense of arrival" and enhance the "stunning" Grade II* listed buildings on Station Road.

The proposals include moving the Josiah Wedgwood statue from the opposite side of the road to a more prominent location outside the station entrance.

The station's main entrance would be open as normal during the work, the council said, but anyone parking for the day or longer was advised to head to the rear of the station where 166 spaces were being created next to Car Park 3.
