Teenager dies despite Nottingham lake rescue effort
Shane WightmanA teenager has died after swimming in a lake at a Nottingham watersports centre.
Fire, ambulance crews, a police helicopter and underwater dive team were called to Colwick Park Marina just after 14:00 BST.
Officers said they were told the 16-year-old boy swam out to a buoy and dived down but did not resurface.
He was pulled from the water at 15:20 and taken to hospital but was confirmed dead at 16:00.
Police said the teenager left his clothes on a bench and swam out to a buoy.
He then dived down and the alarm was raised when he did not reappear.
Over the weekend a man was rescued from the water at Colwick, which prompted a warning from the city council about the dangers of open water.
Insp Craig Nolan from Nottinghamshire Police said: "It is quite murky under there and quite reedy.
"It is a beautiful setting and a beautiful day and lots of people come here to visit.
"The temptation to jump in is very great but it is too dangerous and the result can be a tragedy like this."
Entry to the park has been affected and a planned swimming event has been cancelled.
