Error spotted on new Chelmsford road sign

An obvious spelling mistake has been spotted on a new large city road sign.

The sign on the A131, on the outskirts of Chelmsford, shows the city as "Chelmsord" without an "f".

Essex County Council apologised to residents for the "unfortunate mistake".

It confirmed the error, which was not present at the design stage, appeared during printing and a replacement sign would be "installed as soon as possible".

A spokesperson for Essex Highways said: "We apologise to local residents about this unfortunate mistake.

"A developer was responsible for the printing and installation of the sign, not Essex Highways.

"When Essex Highways signed off the design of the road sign, there was no spelling error.

"The developer concerned is aware that the sign needs to be replaced as a priority and at no cost to Essex taxpayers.

"We will ensure the developer installs the replacement as soon as possible."
