A pier has reopened after an unexploded ordnance was found in the sea.

Southend Pier was shut after the discovery of the device, situated about 30m (98ft) from the structure.

Southend Borough Council, which runs the pier, said the closure was to ensure the safety of visitors and staff.

The Royal Navy bomb disposal unit detonated the suspected World War Two bomb on Thursday.

In a statement, the council said: "We can confirm Southend-on-Sea Pier is open as usual today after a WW2 bomb was safely detonated yesterday evening.

"Thanks again to the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Unit, coastguard and all involved for their swift action and for keeping our residents and visitors safe."
