A park which reopened last year after a £50,000 revamp has been badly damaged in a suspected arson attack.

Firefighters were called to the play area at Badger Recreation Ground in Brockwell Place, Chesterfield at 01:26 BST on Friday.

The slide and other equipment at the play area, which reopened in February 2022, was destroyed in the blaze.

Chesterfield Borough Council said the site had been closed until further notice.

A statement from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said: "A joint police and fire investigation has determined the most likely cause to be deliberate ignition."
