A "loving" and "lively" Manchester musician has died after he was assaulted at a pub.

Ben Wright died on Tuesday after being attacked outside the bar on Liverpool Road Irlam, Salford, in the early hours of Sunday.

He suffered serious injuries and three men in their 20s were arrested on suspicion of assault later on Sunday. There has been no further update in how the inquiry is progressing.

"Ben knew everyone and everyone loved him - you couldn't help it," close friend Gary Harkin told BBC Radio Manchester.

"There are many broken hearts left in the wake of this senseless act of violence.

"The next day was his birthday, a birthday that he would spend on life support.

"That life support was then switched off on Tuesday and this beautiful man passed away."

'Loved by many'

Harkin said his friend was "loved by many" and "a very lively man, full of mischief and fun, with plenty of soul and spirit too".

"Everyone mentions his infectious laugh and his big grin. They also talk about how he was always there for people when they were in need - always there with support and encouragement," he continued.

"This was a man with a big heart and his love was authentic."

Harkin also said Wright was a part of the Manchester music scene and played in a band, often welcoming others to record in his home.

"He was a big support of the local music scene and could always be found at gigs giving loads of energy," he said.

"You will be missed by many people Ben."

Det Ch Insp Helen Bagnall said the attack, which happened close to Dessie's Place, was a "shocking incident and our thoughts are firmly with the victim and his family during this extremely difficult time".

"We are working at pace and remain absolutely committed to identifying everyone involved and bringing those responsible to justice," she said.

"Three arrests have been made in connection with this incident, and we are continuing to appeal for further information."
