A man had to be rescued after he was trapped in his car in rising flood water.

Crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were called to Spring Hill, Widdington at about 09:00 GMT.

Using water rescue equipment, firefighters waded out to the car and carried the driver, who the service described as elderly, safely away.

"While it is tempting to drive through flooded roads, we strongly advise against it," said Paul Curtis, watch manager from Saffron Walden Fire Station.

"Firstly, you don't know how deep the water is and there could be hidden debris, lifted manholes and flooded roadside verges — which can often be deep — which all present serious hazards to motorists.

"If you come across a flooded road, please turn around and find another route — it's not worth the risk."
