Residents in south Birmingham are being asked to keep an eye out for a missing pet corn snake which escaped from a home.

The snake, called Jasper, is about 4.5 feet long and believed to have got outside through a door that had been left open in the Northfield area of the city on Thursday.

Its owner Vanessa Parker-Barnes said the snake is non-venomous and not aggressive, but may be cold and frightened after being outside.

"Jasper occasionally likes to escape and go on adventures. But this afternoon she took it to the extreme", she said.

The owner said they had already searched the house thoroughly but believed Jasper managed to get outside earlier in the day.

People living near The Roundabout, Lydiate Avenue and Long Saw Drive are being asked to check gardens, sheds and quiet corners where the snake may be hiding.

Parker-Barnes said the snake got outside through a door left open by mistake.

She said: "We have turned the room she was in, upside down. If you feel brave please pop in her a pillow case or a bag and we will come and get her.

"I know finding her if she got out is near impossible."

Anyone who believes they have spotted the snake is asked to contact the owner on Facebook.

Corn snakes are commonly kept as pets and are not venomous.

Parker-Barnes said they were hopeful she would be found soon.
