'Monster' ex-teacher jailed for sex abuse
Cumbria PoliceA "monster" ex-teacher previously jailed for molesting two boys has been handed a further prison sentence for abusing four other teenagers.
Paul Stuart Adams, who worked in schools in west Cumbria and also freelanced for the BBC, "manufactured" occasions to give him private and close contact with the boys over a number of years, Carlisle Crown Court was told.
The 78-year-old, of Workington, was jailed in 2022 and released on licence late last year, and had denied further wrongdoing.
Following a trial in January, he was found guilty of three indecent assaults, a sexual assault and paying a child for sexual services, and has now been sentenced to seven years.
The sentencing hearing was told press coverage of the 2022 criminal case prompted the victims, all now adults, to come forward and disclosed they had been abused by Adams in separate single incidents during a period spanning many decades.
Three of them occurred in a school setting, the court heard.
Impact statements read to the judge described the victims' trauma, emotional and physical hurt and feelings of betrayal.
Passing sentence, Judge Michael Fanning told Adams: "People have to trust teachers, have to trust that they won't abuse pupils in their care.
"You used this aura of respectability in your position of authority to abuse boys.
"That's why your offending against school pupils in your care is so grotesque."
After Adams had left the hearing, the judge told two of the victims who were present in court: "You are not responsible for what the monster did."
Speaking after sentencing, Det Insp Calvin Greaves, of Cumbria Police, said: "Adams abused his position and should have been someone his victims were able to trust.
"I would like to thank the victims for their bravery in coming forward and I hope today's sentencing can bring some form of closure after all these years."
