Drivers have reported being stuck for up to four hours following a crash on the A23 involving a lorry carrying a forklift truck.

National Highways said the southbound carriageway was closed shortly before 18:00 GMT between the M23 at junction 11 and Crawley in West Sussex, near the B2115, after the HGV overturned.

At about 21:15, the road was still closed although police said traffic trapped within the closure was being allowed through the scene.

Drivers said on social media they had been stuck in the traffic for hours. One person said they had moved just two miles (3.2km) in three hours.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it was dealing with two incidents on the A23 southbound, with traffic between Handcross and Slaugham at a standstill.

Sussex Police has been contacted for more information.
