People have been told to stay away from a beach cliff after a landslide.

The cliff collapse near the old swimming pool at St Bees in Whitehaven, Cumbria, in the early hours, was "significant", the coastguard said.

Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team said no people or dogs were unaccounted for and that it had taped off the area.

"With the possibility of further collapse, we would urge the public to avoid the cliff top as well as the base of the cliffs for your own safety," it said.

Areas of the public pathway had narrowed as a result, the coastguard said.

It added that it had placed temporary signage and tape around the landslip, and informed the local authorities.
