Buildings to be lit up for Holocaust Memorial Day
Hull City CouncilKeys buildings in Hull are to be lit up purple to mark Holocaust Memorial Day next week.
Hull City Hall, Ferens Art Gallery, the Maritime Museum and the Queen Victoria monument will be lit up on Tuesday 27 January, along with many buildings across the UK.
The day commemorates the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered during the Holocaust, and the millions more killed under Nazi persecution.
Mike Ross, leader of Hull City Council, said: "Through Holocaust Memorial Day, we will come together to show that we continue to challenge hatred in whatever form it occurs.
"This year's theme is Bridging Generations, which is a reminder that the responsibility of remembrance doesn't end with the survivors.
"It lives on through their children, grandchildren, and ultimately through all of us.
"The theme asks us to engage actively with the past, to learn from the division created by the Nazis, which culminated in the atrocities they inflicted on innocent people."
Holocaust Memorial Day is held on the same day every year, due to it being the liberation date of the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
