A police officer, who was known for his appearance in a TV series in the noughties, has retired after "an impressive 30 years of operational service".

Thames Valley Police (TVP) PC Jim Mahony became popular on the police reality show Road Wars.

TVP said he joined the force in July 1996 as a response officer in Oxford before joining Roads Policing in 2002.

"We are all incredibly proud of you," it wrote in a post on social media, where colleagues and the public shared memories from his career and sent good wishes.

The force added that he was "more widely remembered by some as 'Jim from Road Wars'".

The series ran for eight seasons from 2003 to 2010 on Sky1 where it followed 14 members of the TVP road crime unit.

The show provided a back-seat view of officers as they captured dangerous drivers in action and the provided insights into car crime and its prevention.

TVP said of Mahony: "Thirty years of frontline operational policing is no mean feat, and we hope Jim walks out of the door with his head held high, knowing just how much of a difference he has made over the years."

It added that his colleagues wished him "a long, happy and healthy retirement" and the XRC01 car "won't be the same" without him.
