Man jailed for controlling and coercive behaviour
Surrey PoliceA man has been jailed for more than two years for engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and strangulation against his ex-partner, and criminal damage.
Sean Brady, of Sunbury-on-Thames, was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on Friday.
Surrey Police said they received a call from a woman on 31 March last year, telling officers her ex-partner had climbed on top of her car and started causing damage.
Brady had previously sent her various threatening and abusive messages, police added.
A Surrey Police spokesperson said officers attended the address where the woman disclosed five years of physical and psychological abuse.
The woman told police the abuse became "progressively worse" resulting in her being assaulted several times, adding Brady would regularly throw objects at her and on one occasion strangled her.
Brady was arrested two days later and subsequently pleaded guilty on day one of the trial, police added.
Det Con Charlotte Bell, from Surrey Police criminal investigations department, said: "Controlling and coercive behaviour is used to exert power and control over another person's daily life.
"It often involves tactics like isolation and intimidation and can have a significant impact on a person's physical and mental wellbeing."
She added: "I would like to recognise the survivor's strength in disclosing Brady's history and behaviour to our officers.
"I also want to thank her for her trust in Surrey Police and bravery for supporting our investigation."
