Residents were forced to leave their homes after a fire broke out in a block of flats.

A mother and her children returned home to their flat in Green Street in St Helier, Jersey, on Monday afternoon to find smoke filling their kitchen and a bag of shopping smouldering on the cooker hob, said Jersey Fire and Rescue Service.

Firefighters evacuated the building and several people were treated for smoke inhalation, but no serious injuries were reported.

The fire service later issued a warning about the dangers of using cookers as work surfaces. They said leaving items on hobs could lead to fires if the appliance was switched on accidentally.
