Plans for a new specialist waste treatment facility have been approved.

The Humber Gate Waste Treatment Facility, to be located on land off Energy Park Way, Grimsby, will specialise in the processing of commercial, industrial and medical waste classified as hazardous.

Humber Resources Group Ltd is behind the project, which is expected to deal with about 25,000 tonnes of waste a year and create 40 permanent full-time jobs.

Council planning officers said the scheme would bring £50m into the North East Lincolnshire economy.

An agent for the applicant said the facility would be the first of its kind in the Humber region.

Councillor Henry Hudson said: "You've to welcome the jobs. You've got to welcome the business rates that this is going to bring to us."

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the site, which was part of the former Courtalds plant, will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with most waste being delivered between 06:00 and 22:00 GMT.

It will process waste, like paint, resins, adhesives and pharmaceutical waste through high-temperature thermal treatment at more than 1,000 degrees.

A new access bridge built over an existing pipeline will connect it to reception and office blocks, which will include driver welfare facilities.

Construction is expected to take 36 months once it begins.

The waste facility is not the only major project in the pipeline off Energy Park Way.

Planning permission has previously been granted for a carbon fibre factory and for a separate tyre waste facility.
