A man has been jailed for his involvement in disorder in Leeds that saw a double-decker bus torched and a police car flipped.

Trouble flared on the evening of 18 July in Harehills after police assisted social workers taking four children into emergency foster care, with hundreds later taking to the streets. The children were later returned to extended family members.

Catalin Tiuga, 42, of Seaforth Place, was pictured on CCTV throwing bottles at police and carrying a lighter used to set cardboard boxes alight, his trial heard.

Tiuga later admitted violent disorder and arson offences and was sentenced to four years in prison at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday.

West Yorkshire Police said 33 people had now been convicted over offences connected to the Harehills disorder.

Officers said 86 people had been arrested in connection with the unrest, with 43 of them charged as investigations continue.
