A dog walker stranded at a West Sussex beach has been rescued.

Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said the person with two dogs became cut off on a sandbar by the tide at West Wittering Beach on Saturday.

It detailed that Hayling Lifeboat arrived on scene and brought them ashore.

The person was fine, "although a little cold", after attempting to get back to shore, the coastguard continued.

"The sand bars at West Wittering Beach go out a long way at low tide," said its spokesperson.

"When the tide changes it races in and its easy to get cut off quickly, the currents are extremely strong. Do not attempt to cross or enter the water."

The coastguard added that if people do walk out on the sand bars they should check tide times, keep looking back to ensure they do not get cut off and carry a phone.

People in an emergency out at sea, on the beach or along the coast should dial 999 and ask for coastguard, it said.
