Police said pupils were able to leave safely at the end of the school day

Several pupils and members of staff at a Sheffield school were left injured after a fight broke out between students, with one staff member needing hospital treatment.

Officers were called to Fir Vale Academy, in Owler Lane, at about midday when an altercation led to "broader pockets of disorder" among students in the grounds, according to South Yorkshire Police.

A number of staff members and students received minor injuries not needing medical treatment, while one staff member was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries "not the result of an assault", a force spokesperson said.

There was no evidence of weapons being used and no arrests had been made, they added.

Pupils were able to leave the premises safely at the end of the school day and the injured person had since been discharged from hospital, the spokesperson said.

Supt Paul Ferguson, from South Yorkshire Police, said: "We understand this incident will have caused significant concern in the local community, especially for families who had children in school at the time."

Officers would remain in the area carrying out "intensive, high visibility patrols" and inquiries would continue through the evening and into tomorrow, Ferguson said.

"We will continue to work closely with the school and key partners to ensure the school is a safe and welcoming environment."

Ferguson said officers would remain in the area and continue to support the school and local community on Friday.
