Five people have appeared in court charged with murder after a man died when he was hit by a car at a petrol station.

Daniel Ambler, 23, was found with serious injuries at the New Seaham Service Station forecourt in County Durham on Thursday and he died at the scene.

Barry Anderson, 51, Ashton Anderson, 19, and Barry Logan Anderson, 18, and two 17-year-old boys who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been charged with murder and violent disorder.

They appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court where they were told the case was too serious to be dealt with by magistrates. All five were remanded in custody.

They are next due to appear at Teesside Crown Court on Wednesday.

"While there will be an increased police presence as the investigation continues, I can reassure the community of Seaham that we believe this was an isolated incident and we have no information to suggest any wider risk to the public," Det Ch Insp Chris Woollett said.

"Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Daniel Ambler."

Ambler was described as a "kind-hearted soul" in a family tribute.
