A Shropshire mayor has been disqualified from driving and fined after admitting to drink-driving.

Ryan Davies, 44, the mayor of Clun, was in a grey Mercedes on Rookery Lane, near Knighton, on 24 May when police say they were called to reports of a cyclist being hit.

They received minor injuries, officers said, and a blood sample showed Davies had 183 milligrams of alcohol in his system - more than twice the legal limit.

Davies originally pleaded not guilty to driving a motor vehicle when the alcohol level was above the limit and was due to go to trial at Llandrindod Wells Magistrates' Court on 18 November, but subsequently changed his plea to guilty.

He was disqualified from driving for 20 months, which could be reduced if he completes a drink-drive awareness course, and was fined £3,017.

Davies was re-elected as the chair of Clun Town Council with Chapel Lawn and the town mayor in May.

Both Davies and Clun Town Council with Chapel Lawn have been approached for comment.

Update 19 December: A previous version of this article did not mention that a cyclist was hit by Ryan Davis as this did not appear in the documents released by the court about the incident. The article has been updated to include details about the cyclist after the police and CPS both confirmed this element to the BBC. Court documents also said that the incident took place on 25 May. We have amended the article after the police confirmed that the incident took place on 24 May.
