Logan Smith, 18, died after being hit by a car on the M5 in North Somerset

An inquest has opened into the death of a man who got out of an ambulance on the M5 and was Tasered by police before being hit by a car.

Logan Smith, 18, was being taken to hospital on 30 November 2025 when the ambulance pulled onto the hard shoulder near Weston-super-Mare due to staff concerns.

The police watchdog said previously that Smith entered the motorway and an officer tried to engage with him before discharging his Taser. Smith fell to the ground and was hit by a car, it added.

Coroner Dr Peter Harrowing opened and adjourned the inquest at Avon Coroner's Court earlier and said a review of the case would take place on 30 March.

Coroner's officer Alexis Camp said the circumstances leading up to Smith's death remain under investigation.

She confirmed Smith, from Weston-super-Mare, died at the scene and was later identified through fingerprints at the mortuary.

Harrowing named Smith's family, South Western Ambulance Service and Avon and Somerset Police as interested persons in the inquest alongside the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision and their insurer.

The police officer's actions are being investigated separately by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after Avon and Somerset Police made a mandatory referral following the incident.
