Alternate weekly bin collections to begin
Lewes District CouncilAlternate weekly bin collections are due to start in an area of East Sussex.
Lewes District Council (LDC) said the move, which comes into force on Monday, was to boost recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste sent for incineration.
"Evidence shows that this approach encourages residents to think more carefully about what goes into each bin, significantly increasing recycling levels," it added.
Under the new system, recycling and non recyclable waste will be collected on alternating weeks, but food waste will continue to be collected weekly.
The council said the move brought the authority in line with the rest of East Sussex and the majority of councils across England.
Wendy Maples, LDC's lead cabinet member for neighbourhood wellbeing, said the move would make it "even easier for households to recycle more from home".
"Every extra item we recycle helps reduce our environmental impact and supports a more sustainable future for everyone," she added.
