A simple face is drawn on the snowman using dark lines, featuring two vertical marks for eyes and a curved line for a smile. The surrounding ground is covered in snow, with some patches appearing icy or slushy. A number of schools were closed and rail services disrupted, but South Yorkshire was largely unaffected by Storm Goretti despite forecasts of up to a foot (30cm) of snow in hilly areas.

Most of Sheffield, as well as areas to the north and west of the city, were covered by an amber Met Office weather warning for snow, which was in place until 09:00.

Snow began to fall on Thursday evening, with TransPennine Express suspending all train services between Sheffield and Manchester from 18:00.

Among the schools closed for the day were King Edward VII School in Sheffield and Penistone Grammar School in Barnsley.

No major weather-related incidents were reported on roads though photos showed a bus struggling in Norton Lees Road, Meersbrook.

While parts of Doncaster saw virtually no snowfall, residents in Meadowhead in Sheffield and Penistone in Barnsley got their sledges and shovels out.

Sam Jones, manager at the Norton pub in Meadowhead, was busy from first light to make sure the path to the watering hole was clear for any potential punters.

He said: "It's just one of those things, isn't it? We knew it was coming so we'll do as best as we can and just try and get on with it."

Behind the sign, a large blue and white bus is positioned diagonally across the street, appearing stuck or unable to move due to the icy conditions. A further yellow weather warning for snow and ice for South and West Yorkshire, remains in place until midday on Saturday.

The Met Office said the wintry showers would bring some snow accumulations in places, but that ice was "a more widespread risk".

People have been warned that some roads and railways may be affected and said the ice could create a risk of slips and falls on untreated surfaces.

In the foreground, there is a large expanse of untouched snow bordered by a simple wire fence. Behind the fence, clusters of leafless trees stand scattered across the terrain, their dark branches contrasting sharply against the white snow.
Further into the background, the hills rise gently, layered with snow and divided by dark lines of hedgerows or stone walls, creating a patchwork effect. A body of water, likely a lake or reservoir, is partially visible among the trees in the mid-ground, adding depth to the scene. "Whilst not all areas will be affected, scattered wintry showers will continue to feed inland from the North Sea through Friday afternoon, evening and overnight into Saturday morning," a Met Office spokesperson said.

They said up to 2ins (5cm) of snow were possible on hills above 325ft (100m) elevation.
