    Students Rufus and Lottie

While in lower-lying parts of Sheffield you'd be forgiven for thinking what's the fuss all about, near the Derbyshire border it's a different scene.

Students Rufus and Lotti were on their way to the Peak District when their vehicle's snow chain got stuck around the wheel.

Rufus said: "We had to jack the car up and unravel the chain through half-a-foot of snow."

Afterwards, the pair decided it was safer to turn back and not continue their journey.

Thankfully though, they say they were well prepared - they had a shovel, hot chocolate and lots of layers in the car.

Nicola Cullen, manager at the Norfolk Arms pub and hotel in Ringinglow, says she was in at 06:30.

Although plenty of snow was around, she paid tribute to the local farmers who had worked through the night to keep the roads clear.

She said their work had meant guests and suppliers could get through to the pub, she describes as having a "cosy feel" on a snowy day.

The team at the pub also took advantage of blown snow, with a small drift being turning into a snowman!

In light of the weather conditions in parts of South Yorkshire, Doncaster GP Dr Dean Eggitt has given this message to vulnerable people: "Please don't go out".

He says the cold weather impairs the immune system which makes it more likely for people to pick up bugs and because the heart has to work harder - vulnerable people can be more prone to chest problems.

"If you do go out, then you're more likely to find yourself in a slippery situation, whether it's snowy or rainy, so you're putting your bones at risk by falling over."

However, he says staying indoors can also be pose health problems if the cold gets too much and urged people to wear lots of layers and take plenty of hot drinks.

It's chilly in South Yorkshire as you can see from some of the posts below.

I've been out and about in Penistone, where there's been quite a bit of snow.

The town centre is snowy but moving but it looks like Penistone Grammar pupils will have a day of sledging and snowballs!

I spent yesterday evening in the Peak District for Look North and this morning I've been in Ringinglow and Fulwood to the west of Sheffield.

I'm outside the Norfolk Arms where we've had up to four inches of snow.

There is some evidence of drifting as we are high up here and can look across the city below.

There are still dark clouds around and the pub manager Lucy Cullen told me it was tricky getting in but local farmers had cleared the roads.

I'm back out again now and heading into the Hope Valley on the hunt for more snowy scenes and stories.

Both campuses at Sheffield College are closed with some exams rearranged.

On its website, the college said the decision had been made "due to the travel disruption and continuing weather conditions".

It said students due to take planned exams would be supported to make new arrangements.

The college added that where possible, "learning should be facilitated online" and its nurseries would also be shut.

It said: “Staff and student safety is our number one priority, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely. Further updates will continue to be shared on our website and social media channels and an all-student email will be sent shortly.

“We expect to be open as normal on Monday January 12.”

One place in Yorkshire which has seen snow is Scarborough and Whitby.

The North Yorkshire coastal towns were hit by a downfall overnight into January 3.

Lots of people reported not being able to use footpaths and the local MP said she believed more needed to be done to help individuals and businesses.

I often think snow is a tale of two neighbourhoods because you can travel two miles down the road and it's a very different story.

But it's good news from Hillsborough. I'm stood at Middlewood tram stop and the main roads are completely clear.

Trams are also running, their timetable is just as normal.

I've been having a chat with a Supertram driver who has gone that extra mile and left for work at 4.30am to make sure he could get there in time.

He says the biggest issue for the tram is when cars are abandoned. The snow itself is not a problem for them, trams can cut through the snow.

  16. No trains between Sheffield and Manchesterpublished at 09:05 GMT 9 January

    Sheffield train station

There are still no trains running between Sheffield and Manchester after TransPennine Express (TPE) closed the line on Thursday ahead of Storm Goretti.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, Rob Cox, operations director for the train operator, said there were currently no services running between the two cities or intermediary stations along the Hope Valley line.

He said shuttle services were running from Sheffield to the east and from Manchester to the west.

"If people need to get to North West they will need to take a train to Leeds and then catch a train via there."

Cox said the decision to shut the line was a result of the amber weather alert and had been made for "the safety of passengers and staff".

He added; "We are monitoring the situation and doing what we can to clear the line so we can get trains running again."

Cox said if people were unable to make the journey they had planned then they were entitled to compensation.

"If I don't do it it'll be quiet!," the manager says.

He says they plan to open at 11 as usual, but he's yet to hear from some staff who live on the other side of the city if they can get in.

Gritters have been out working all night on the main roads in Sheffield.

Councillor Joe Otten, chair of the council’s street scene committee, said all priority one and two routes had been covered – which made up 60% of the roads.

Priority 1 routes include major roads connecting Sheffield to other cities and motorways and roads to hospitals while priority 2 include roads near key public services and other main and link road.

Otten said: “They’re still going now and will probably go out again on the higher routes in the morning but that will depend on the weather."

Although traffic is moving slowly in a lot places, Otten said the emerging picture was most people could get out and about but should take care.

  19. Schools shut while some open laterpublished at 08:31 GMT 9 January

Some schools in Sheffield are closed as a result of the snow while others are opening later.

Westfield School said the adverse weather conditions meant it would be shut and that parents and carers would be updated on the closure by email and text message.

King Edward VII School on Glossop Road in Broomhall is also closed while Silverdale School and High Storrs School said they would be opening later in the morning.
