People have been warned to keep their windows and doors shut due to a large fire at a barn that may contain asbestos.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the blaze at Poplar's Farm Road in Kettering at 22:00 GMT on Sunday.

It asked residents in Kettering, Barton Seagrave, Burton Latimer and Grafton Underwood to avoid ventilating their homes due to the plume of smoke.

Part of the building is still burning and is expected to last for some time, the fire service said.

Samples of the roof will be sent off for analysis to determine if asbestos is present

One crew and a water bowser remain on scene and some smoke is still coming from the building.

A fire service spokesperson said: "At the start of the fire, it spread to what was believed to be an asbestos roof.

"Samples of this will be collected and sent for further testing to confirm.

"The smoke plume has now reduced and it is now a quantity of wood that is burning, which is expected to continue for some time.

"If still affected by the smoke, nearby residents are advised to continue keeping their windows and doors shut, but are safe to go about their normal day."

Four crews were sent at the height of the fire.

An investigation into its cause will take place later, the fire service added.
