Tips to accept some large electrical goods again

Tips in Norfolk are to accept some unwanted electrical equipment again after a major fire at a recycling site.

The service was paused following a blaze at the Wiser recycling warehouse on Brunel Way, Thetford.

But Norfolk County Council said a number of larger items, including televisions, fridge freezers and washing machines, could be taken to its recycling centres from Thursday.

The centres are still unable to take smaller electrical items such as batteries, mobile phones and light bulbs.

People have been told to store them safely at home and not to put them in the household waste, as it can be a fire risk.

What can be collected?

Recycling centres across Norfolk will accept:

  • televisions and monitors
  • fridge freezers
  • washing machines
  • tumble dryers
  • dishwashers
  • cookers
  • microwaves

The council says there is still a ban on smaller electrical items as they need pre-sorting before onward transport and there is "no safe treatment capacity" available.

These include:

  • laptops
  • mobile phones
  • batteries
  • light bulbs
  • any other small electrical and battery-powered item

The council said it had been "continuing to work closely with its contractor to restore full electrical waste services as quickly as possible".

People have been told to check with district councils to see if any kerb-side collections, such as those for bulky waste, have been disrupted.
