Residents in Cornwall have been urged to register to vote ahead of the local elections.

Cornwall Council said the deadline to register to vote in the upcoming elections was midnight on 11 April.

It added those who had recently moved home or changed their name would have to register again.

Once registered, voters have the option to vote in person, by post or proxy vote, the local authority said.

On Thursday 1 May elections will be held for 23 councils and six mayors in England.

Voters going to a polling station will need to show photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence.

Kate Kennally, chief executive of Cornwall Council, said: "Local elections are an important opportunity to have your say on who represents you and makes decisions about issues that directly affect day-to-day life here in Cornwall."
