Work on new railway bridge to start next month

Work to construct a new footbridge at a railway station is expected to begin next month.

Greater Anglia is to build the £5.5m structure at Stowmarket in Suffolk, complete with built-in lifts.

The project was due to be completed over the summer but the company said manufacturing issues had delayed its start until the end of November, with opening expected in January after a period of testing.

The former footbridge was replaced with a temporary facility in January and the new one is made of stainless steel, which is long-lasting and does not need to be painted.

Greater Anglia said the next available weekend for installation would be 29 and 30 November, when engineering works are planned for the route between Norwich and Ipswich.

Passengers have also been warned that from 17 November to 4 December, the number of parking spaces at the station would be reduced for construction equipment to be brought on site.

"Greater Anglia is making good progress on the preparation works for this new footbridge ahead of its installation later this year, which will enable easier, more accessible journeys for passengers using and changing trains at Stowmarket station," Mr Goodrum said.

"We are looking forward to delivering this revolutionary new footbridge, complete with lifts, for our customers."
