Recycling centre fire extinguished after three days

A fire at a recycling centre which burned for three days has been extinguished.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) said flames ignited at the site off Chapel Lane in Hurn, Dorset, at 11:26 BST on Wednesday, resulting in residents being warned to keep their windows shut.

The fire service said the fire had been "very deep seated within the waste stack".

In an update on Friday afternoon, DWFRS said the fire had been extinguished and the site would soon be handed back to BCP Council.

It said "tonnes of recyclables" had been moved during the three-day effort to extinguish the fire.

"The only way to ensure it was fully out was to break down the stack and move the affected materials outside for damping down," it said.

A telehandler from neighbouring Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was brought in to help with moving the burning waste.
