Drivers warned against using flooded fords
Malvern PoliceMotorists are being urged not to drive into flooded fords after a rise in cases of stranded vehicles.
The recent increase included a driver getting stuck in Kempsey Ford, near Worcester, this week, West Mercia Police said.
"Recently there have been vehicles going into flooded fords, these are also not acceptable places to go in on foot or in a vehicle," a spokesperson said.
They added that between 30cm (12 inches) and 60cm (24 inches) was enough to sweep away "most vehicles, including large four-wheel drive cars".
"Just because the car you are driving is a 4x4 does not necessarily mean it is suited to deep water," they added.
"Do not drive into a flood at all if it is not obvious where the road is. Most roads that are flooded by rivers will still have a strong flow and undercurrent and can easily sweep anyone off their feet."
They also explained that driving into flood water can cause a bow wave that could cause damage to properties in the surrounding area.
"The driver of the vehicle will be liable for the damage caused and will not be able to claim this off their vehicle's insurance as most insurance policies are invalidated if you drive through flood water," the spokesperson said.
