The Oldside site in Workington is to be fenced off ahead of its redevelopment

A council has urged people to stay away from a patch of land ahead of its redevelopment.

Cumberland Council has asked residents to keep off a section of the Oldside site in Workington as new fencing is to be installed on Monday in preparation for the land to be cleared.

The clearance is part of the wider Workington Gateway Scheme, a larger development project which will include the redevelopment of the Port of Workington.

Leader of Cumberland Council, Mark Fryer, said although the area was popular with dog walkers it was important people stayed away for their own safety.

"Once complete, this scheme will help pave the way for further inward investment in the area, creating jobs for local people and exciting opportunities for businesses.

"It is of vital importance to the local economy," he said.

Fencing will surround the 10-acre site, which will encompass the southern area closest to the port.

The private access road through Oldside will remain open for those who have permission to use it.

Earlier this year, redundant infrastructure was demolished and hazardous material was removed from the port as part of the Workington Gateway Scheme.

The programme has been financed through £4.5m in government funding made available through the Workington Town Deal.
