A man has been charged after a woman died following a suspected assault.

Northumbria Police said they were contacted shortly after 22:00 GMT on Saturday following reports of an altercation on Russell Street in North Shields where a woman sustained a serious injury.

Lisa Denton, 40, from North Shields was taken to hospital in a critical condition and died the following morning.

Liam Moor, 19, of Telford Street in East Howdon has been charged with manslaughter and will appear at Bedlington Magistrates' Court later.

A woman in her 50s was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender but has been released on police bail.
