A man has been jailed for more than seven years after stabbing a shop worker in the stomach during a robbery in Birmingham.

Reece Allen pulled out a knife when the worker tried to stop him taking cleaning products from the shop in Heathland Avenue, Shard End, on 15 February.

The shop worker was taken to hospital but not seriously injured. Allan also attacked a police officer after being arrested.

He was sentenced to seven years and six months after admitting robbery, wounding, possession of a knife, theft and assaulting an emergency worker at Birmingham Crown Court on 20 March.

A spokesperson from West Midlands Police described the attack as "completely unacceptable".

"Any assault on a shop worker is unacceptable, but for Allen to have used a knife makes this even more shocking," he said.

"Allen has also rightly been sentenced for assaulting one of our staff members whilst in custody – again something we never tolerate."
