Fred Bilgic expects to serve about 200 people on Christmas Day

A cafe in Shropshire is preparing dozens of free Christmas dinners and gifts for anyone in the community who might otherwise be alone on Christmas Day.

Fred Bilgic, owner of The Ploughboy in Shrewsbury, has been doing it for 11 years after his wife had the idea, and said it was the family's way of giving back.

In total, the cafe expects to serve about 200 people with turkey, beef and chicken meals and will be taking food to homeless people in the town.

"Loads of people are lonely," Mr Bilgic said, "we're just happy to help make their Christmas Day."

"My mum and dad are two of the most selfless individuals helping people on Christmas when people have nowhere to go," said their son Emrah.

"I'm really happy there is somewhere in the community for people like that to have somewhere, instead of being alone."

Milly Bilgic, pictured with gifts that will be given out, said they had "quite a lot" of dinners to get ready

Daughter Milly said: "Lots of people come, pop in, and we also pop out to the homeless as well to drop off food, so it's quite a lot of dinners we get ready".

She said the family also managed to squeeze in time for a Christmas Day meal too.

"Towards the end, we all sit down with the volunteers and we all have dinner together, so it's really nice."
