Two people have been arrested after a man was seriously injured in a pub fight in Liverpool.

Merseyside Police said the 33-year-old has been left in a critical condition after the fight outside the Hare and Hounds in West Derby, just after 00:30 GMT.

He suffered serious head injuries and members of the public came to his aid with CPR in Mill Lane, before he was taken to hospital, the force added.

The two men, aged 24 and 39, were arrested on suspicion of assault. Police have appealed for any witnesses or any CCTV or dashcam footage

Det Ch Insp Steve McGrath said it was a "serious assault" that has left the victim "in a critical condition in hospital".

He added: "I would like to take the opportunity to thank the caring members of the public who carried out vital CPR on the injured man at the scene prior to the emergency services attending."
