A new leader of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust will take up his position later this year.

Last year, the trust - which is under scrutiny for its role in treating Nottingham attacks killer Valdo Calocane - announced its current leader Ifti Majid was due to retire.

A report by the Care Quality Commission released this year called on its senior leadership to improve.

Mark Axcell, who has been appointed CEO of the trust, said he was "really pleased to be joining the trust at this critical time".

Axcell, who was previously CEO of the NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board, added: "Having spent much of my career leading mental health and community organisations, I understand both the scale of the task and the importance of getting it right for patients and staff."

Tom Cahill, chairman of Nottinghamshire Healthcare, said Axcell "is a highly experienced NHS chief executive".

"I'm delighted we have made such a strong appointment," he said.

"The board wanted to appoint an inspirational leader who would guide it through the next phase of our journey and support the delivery of our ambition to provide the very best possible care to the people who need it.

"I am confident we have found that person and I look forward to working with him."
