A busy road has been closed due to debris falling from a bridge in East Ayrshire.

The A77 was initially shut in both directions, with emergency services attending the scene after concrete fell from an overbridge outside of Kilmarnock but later reopened northbound.

Traffic Scotland posted on social media that southbound motorists should use a diversion route.

Road network operator Amey's incident support unit was sent to the scene. The A77 runs from Glasgow to Portpatrick in Dumfries and Galloway.

Amey said on social media: "#A77 S/B Kilmarnock Bypass @ Treeswoodhead Road overbridge. Police currently have the carriageway closed in both directions due to concrete falling from an overbridge. Amey ISU are on site and the Structures crew have been made aware."

Traffic Scotland stated on social media: "The #A77 is CLOSED in BOTH DIRECTIONS due to a police incident.

"Drivers are advised to avoid the area and use an alternative route. Check your journey in advance at http://traffic.gov.scot.
