New games area planned after £200k funding secured

A new multi-use games area for sports including football, hockey, cricket and basketball is to be created in Scarborough after more than £200,000 of funding was secured.

An existing site at Gallows Close in Barrowcliff will be transformed into a facility with a 2G pitch by North Yorkshire Council following investment from the Football Foundation's PlayZones Programme.

The project aims to boost participation in sport for people from lower socio-economic backgrounds, women and girls, and people with long-term health conditions, the council said.

According to a council report, the current playing surface "is in poor condition in places with historic patch repairs and is in need of re-lining".

"The surrounding fence is in poor condition and not of the standard seen on more modern facilities," the council report added.

The Gallows Close Centre will manage the facility, including bookings and routine maintenance.

The grant offer from the Football Foundation would equate to 75% of the maximum project cost, with the remaining 25% covered by the council, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The proposed scheme at Gallows Close is expected to cost £235,000.
