Could this old morgue be your next holiday location?

A former mortuary in Staffordshire could be converted into a holiday home.

The Morgue in Cheddleton was once part of the North Staffordshire Asylum, built at the end of the 19th century, and later renamed St Edward's psychiatric hospital, before closing in 2002.

The site was redeveloped for homes, and the mortuary building, off Birchtree Drive, was sold at auction in 2023 for £137,000.

Planning permission and listed building consent are now being sought to change the building's use into a two-bedroom holiday let.

The "unassuming" single storey building would provide two bedrooms – one with an ensuite – a bathroom and a kitchen and lounge area.

A planning statement submitted to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council as part of the application states that it has been abandoned for many years and has been broken into and used for anti-social behaviour, despite attempts to secure it.

An alternative use would help safeguard a listed building, and improvements inside and out would be "sympathetic to character and appearance."

"There are strong heritage benefits to the restoration and reuse of the building which is currently deteriorating," adds the statement.
