A witness appeared to capture the incident on his mobile phone and police now want to speak to him

A Good Samaritan who tried to protect another member of the public from a gang of youths was left with a broken arm after being assaulted, police have said.

The 46-year-old victim was injured outside McDonald's on Blake Street in York during the incident at 22:30 GMT on 20 December.

North Yorkshire Police has released CCTV images of a witness who appeared to film the assault and could help with the investigation.

Four people, aged between 15 and 18, have been arrested in connection with the assault.

Det Con Grant Baker said: "As our investigation progresses, we are particularly keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have recorded footage on their mobile phones.

"In particular, we would like to identify and speak to the man pictured, who was wearing a T-shirt and dark clothing. He appeared to be filming the incident and was subsequently approached by the youths.

"We wish to make it clear that he is being treated as a witness, not a suspect."
