Temporary 10-bed ward opens after hospice closure
BBCTerminally ill patients in Liverpool will have access to a new ward after a 26-bed hospice inpatient unit permanently closed last year, a charity has said.
Marie Curie staff are being seconded to work on the ward which is a new temporary service opened by Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board (ICB).
It comes after the end-of-life care charity's unit in Woolton closed for good due to financial problems in July 2025 despite the objections of local campaigners.
"This is good news for patients across Liverpool who will have access to these inpatient beds," a Marie Curie North West representative said.
The ward, which began taking patients on Monday, will be open until 31 October with seconded Marie Curie staff working there across medical, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and social work.
A charity spokesman said it was committed to working with the Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board (ICB) and others to "provide the people of Liverpool with high quality palliative and end-of-life care".
The ICB is currently undertaking an assessment of what services and support the community needs in the longer term when the ward closes in autumn.
