Crews deal with spate of wildfires across Norfolk

Firefighters are at the scene of a woodland blaze in west Norfolk.

Crews have been tackling the fire at Shouldham Warren, near King's Lynn, throughout the night after it started at about 13:00 BST on Thursday, with people nearby advised to keep windows and doors shut.

It followed a busy day on Wednesday for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, when it was called out to more than a dozen fires, including five classed as wildfires. It is also providing assistance at the large ongoing fire at Dunwich Heath, Suffolk.

Chief fire officer Ceri Sumner said: "Our teams are working around the clock to ensure the safety of our county, and we remain available 24/7 for Norfolk this summer."

In an update on Friday, the service said the fire was surrounded and there was no risk of it spreading as it was "deep seated" due to the nature of the land.

A spokesperson for the service said: "We will be on site well into the weekend on this incident.

"We are asking people not to visit the Warren for a walk or dog walk, but to stay clear."

Wednesday's incidents included a large field fire at Blackborough End, near King's Lynn, which spread to an outbuilding and damaged a mile of farmland. Crews remained on the scene throughout Thursday to dampen down.

In Knapton, in the north of the county, appliances from a dozen fire stations dealt with a blaze in a field at 15:00 BST. It was out by 22:00.

Firefighters worked through the night at the scene of a woodland fire at Buxton, near Aylsham, and attended a stubble field fire at Gunton, near Cromer.

Meanwhile, following a field fire just outside Aylsham, which broke out just after 14:00 on Wednesday and affected about 60 acres (24 hectares), Bure Valley Railway said it would not be running any locomotives on Thursday.
