Driver sentenced for killing pedestrian
GoogleA man has been handed a suspended prison sentence after causing the death of a pedestrian by careless driving.
Gary Stephens, 63, of Forest Town, Mansfield, died after he was hit by a car while crossing Anchor Lane, Ingoldmells, near Skegness, on 12 August 2023.
Richard Gregory, 58, was sentenced at Lincoln Crown Court on Thursday to six months imprisonment suspended for one year after been found guilty by a jury.
Gregory, of Chapelfield Crescent, Thorpe Hesley, Rotherham, who had no previous convictions or driving endorsements, was also banned from driving for a year.
Lincolnshire Police said Gregory was travelling at about 50mph on a road with a 40mph limit at the time of the collision.
The force said while Stephens may have been initially hidden by other vehicles as he crossed, Gregory was driving too fast to avoid hitting him.
Det Sgt Adam Doona said: "Drivers should always ensure that the speed they are travelling at is within the limit and suitable for all the conditions present.
"In busy areas, particularly where there may be pedestrians, the actual permitted limit may not be suitable at the time you are travelling on it.
"Therefore, you should adjust your speed accordingly, to ensure the safety of yourself and other road users."
