Two new artworks for city gallery collection
Abe Odedina / Ferens Art GalleryTwo new artworks are to go on display at a city gallery.
The Ferens Art Gallery in Hull has added the contemporary pieces to its permanent collection.
Drift Ice by Emma Stibbon, made in 2014 and Madame La Sirene by Abe Odedina, from 2024, were acquired using money left by the gallery's founder Thomas Ferens.
Both works were featured in the Sirens: Women and the Sea exhibition held at the Ferens earlier this year.
Odedina, born in Nigeria in 1960, studied architecture in Hull before eventually becoming an internationally acclaimed artist.
His artwork draws on folk art, mythology, and everyday life, the gallery said.
Stibbon, born in Munster, Germany in 1962 is a Royal Academician.
She uses paper and her work represents environments undergoing transition and change.
Emma Stibbon RA / Ferens Art GalleryCouncillor Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said the gallery was "very excited to have the opportunity to secure these two fantastic artworks".
"The early artworks he [Ferens] acquired for the people of Hull included maritime subjects such as Herbert James Draper's iconic Ulysses and the Sirens and have resulted in the creation of a Designated Maritime Art collection of local, national and international significance.
"We are very pleased to be able to add Emma Stibbon and Abe Odedina's works to this, continuing the story of maritime art and bringing fresh perspectives to the collection for the people of Hull to enjoy and engage with."
