Mariah Carey Pride jacket sells for £4,100 at auction
Getty ImagesA jacket worn by singer Mariah Carey at Brighton Pride has sold for £4,100 ($5,500) at auction.
The bright pink jacket was listed on eBay to raise funds for GLAAD, an LGBTQ+ media advocacy organisation.
It has the phrase Protect the Dolls on the back, which the pop star wore while performing at the Pride in the Park musical festival in support of the transgender community, according to GLAAD.
The online auction, which began on 8 December, saw the jacket receive a total of 69 bids.
Originating in the 1980s ballroom scene, the phrase Protect the Dolls is a phrase calling for the safety, visibility and respect of transgender women against anti-trans rhetoric and violence.
The jacket was described in the listing as having "brown stains" on the lining and stained cuffs, alongside a scratched zipper and missing rhinestones.
GLAADCarey, a five-time Grammy winner, headlined the LGBT+ celebration Brighton Pride this year – fulfilling a promise she had made to fans in 2020 when the event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
"I loved it," she told BBC Radio 2.
Carey, who has sold hundreds of millions of albums, previously said the 50,000-person crowd at the event on 2 August in Preston Park were "amazing".
The American began her career in the late 1980s, securing three UK number one singles and two UK number one albums.
One of her best-known songs is All I Want For Christmas Is You.
