An author has described being "over the moon" that a screen adaptation of her debut novel has been nominated for Hollywood awards.

Michelle Frances's pyschological thriller The Girlfriend, first published in 2017, was released as a TV series by Amazon Prime in September.

The progamme - starring Robin Wright, Olivia Cook and Laurie Davidson - has now been nominated for "Best Limited Series" and "Best Female Actor in a Limited Series" at the Golden Globe Awards.

Frances, from Wadhurst in East Sussex, described the news as a "real pinch me moment - completely unexpected".

The writer said she was looking forward to the event in Los Angeles, though was "slightly scared about finding a dress".

Different perspectives

The Girlfriend is about a successful gallery owner called Laura, whose seemingly perfect life unravels when her son Daniel brings home a new, mysterious girlfriend.

Frances explained: "The mum starts to get suspicious... the new girlfriend is a gold digger and the girlfriend thinks the mum is overprotective and completely over the top with her son."

She said the story was told from two different points of view, allowing audiences to decide whose side they were on.

Frances said she got the idea after a friend of hers met a man while working as an estate agent, and was given a seven-bedroom house by her new in-laws after they married a year later.

She said the story was also inspired by her own experience of becoming "fiercely protective" over her children as a mother.

"And then I sort of thought, what if these two characters met," she continued.

There are six nominees in each category.

Other nominees in the "Best Limited Series" category include Adolescence and The Beast in Me, while nominees in the "Best Female Actor in a Limited Series" category include Erin Doherty for Adolescence and Catherine O'Hara for The Studio.

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards will be held on 11 January.
