A man has been charged following an incident which saw a police officer discharge a firearm.

Police were called to Rosebery Avenue in Yeovil, Somerset, at about 13:50 GMT on Monday to a report a member of public was carrying a suspected handgun.

William Martin, 38 and of Yeovil, has been charged with possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

He was remanded in custody and is set to appear at Yeovil Magistrates' Court later.

A second person, who lives outside the Avon and Somerset Police force area, was arrested in connection with the incident but has since been released on conditional bail.

The force confirmed one officer fired a shot while attempting to engage with a man in nearby Monmouth Road. No-one was injured.
