Telford and Wrekin Council is buying 10 homes for veterans

A new scheme to provide homes for veterans has been launched by a local authority.

Telford and Wrekin Council said it would buy 10 homes that would be prioritised for former armed forces personnel.

It added it would aim to expand the scheme beyond the initial houses in the future.

Council leader Lee Carter said it was an "important step in our commitment to supporting those who have served."

In October, the council opened its Christopher Turley Armed Forces Hub, named in honour of a local councillor and veteran who served in the armed forces for 22 years.

Carter said the homes being purchased would give veterans "priority access to high-quality, secure housing."

He added that it represented a "meaningful investment" by the council that would "provide long-term benefits for those who have served our country."

The local authority said it was also planning to "strengthen current arrangements" to ensure that military compensation payments did not affect means-tested benefit assessments.
