New captain of Rushen parish sworn in
Government HouseA well-known farmer and singer has been sworn in as captain of a parish in south of the Isle of Man.
Paul Costain took on the role officially at ceremony held at Government House.
The Lieutenant Governor Sir John Lorimer presented him with his badge of office and a framed warrant.
The appointment follows the retirement of previous incumbent Stan Clucas, who held the role for 25 years.
The role of captain of the parish, which is held in each of the island's 17 parishes, has become largely ceremonial and involves attending the Tynwald Hill proceedings on the island's national day each year.
The holder of the position is also responsible for organising requisition meetings, if petitioned by parishioners to do so.
The position was first introduced in 1626 as a "watch and ward" of the area.
